History

Built over centuries, it was significantly rebuilt by Travancore king Marthanda Varma in the 1750s, who dedicated his kingdom to the deity. The main idol, formed from 12,000+ Shaligram stones, depicts Vishnu reclining on serpent Adisesha.

Deity and Features

View the 18-foot reclining Vishnu through three doors: face/chest (first), Brahma on lotus navel (second), and feet (third), flanked by Lakshmi, Bhu Devi, and Shiva lingam. A corridor boasts 365 carved granite pillars; only Travancore royals prostrate at the Ottakkal Mandapam.
